Is outdated language stopping progress on suicide prevention?

New research by social enterprise MHFA England, among 2,000 UK employees, ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September, found most employees are still using inappropriate and outdated language to discuss suicide at work.

Two-thirds (66%) of employees are using harmful terms such as ‘committed suicide’. This phrase stems from a time when suicide was illegal. Its use can signal blame, contributing to stigma. Only 10% of employees would know that the best way to save the life of someone thinking of suicide is to ask them directly whether they have a plan to end their life.

New data shows over two thirds of UK workers are driven to quit by bad managers

New research reveals the discrepancy between how managers believe they’re performing and the experience of those being managed by them, with over two-thirds (67%) of workers having left or considered leaving their job because of a bad manager.

With 46% of employees not feeling comfortable talking to their manager about mental health, the data also highlights the importance of management training in driving productivity and improving retention.

Taking place from September 18-19, 2024, at the QEII Centre in London, this event will bring together industry leaders, diversity advocates and EMBs to celebrate and promote the importance of inclusive procurement.

88% of Business owners have concerns about implementing Labour’s employment law changes

In light of Labour proposing one of the biggest shake-ups to employment law the UK has seen in decades, BrightHR surveyed business owners across the country to find out how prepared they are for significant adjustments to their HR and operations.

Almost half (48%) of UK business owners are unsure or unaware of the employment law risks involved in Labour’s agenda for workplace reform and 42% said they were not confident their current HR practices were compliant with existing employment laws.
